In a follow up on the tragic story of “The Ebola Tsunami in Sierra Leone: It Doesn’t Get Any Worse Than This,”  the saga continues in these reports of desperation and assistance.
MUSTAPHA COLE
“My name is Mustapha Cole. I am a Sierra Leonean by nationality and I am giving a report about the present situation in my country. Presently my sweet Sierra Leone is in a critical condition as many poor people are dying of this deadly virus called Ebola. Because of the problems here now, everyday people are dying from different diseases and sicknesses as well. We are looking for support to stop this virus. People are dying like flies every day while we sleep and when we are awake.

Orphaned children

Orphaned children

“No school or college is going on. Children are now staying at home for 8 months now and we have many children who are now orphans as mothers and fathers become victims of this disease. Now there are 1300 children and more every day. The Ministry of Education has come up with a radio program to teach the children, but that most of the poor children cannot benefit from this because there are so few radios in the homes, especially in the rural areas.
“So we need more radios for these children and we are going to pay the school fees when they open again. We are taking food to these people in quarantine villages every day. They cannot go to work or to the market so they are suffering without food and medicine. And we have a plan to take in children who have lost their parents and have no one to bring them up. We are in a serious condition and have no hope.

“I did not know her well. We just go and drop food for them. We can show interest for her. Many people really worry for food. Today people from other villages called me for food. Really, the challenges are many. People don’t have food and water facilities and they are asking for well construction so that they will not find it very hard to fetch water. I will like you to take a look at the photos.
“The funds we receive are from the Bitcoin community and it is $999. We need something like $2000 to get food. We gave them rice, oil, water, onions, margarine, butter, soap, toothpaste, milk, and toothbrushes. The food we gave them should help them until the end of the 21days. We have no government support and we need security to get the food to these people.
“The woman who is crying in the photo lost her two children by this Ebola. She is crying because her third child is dying as well in the back of the house. Now the doctor is with us when we went and gave the food for them so she is asking for help and her third child is dying and needs help. According to the safety rules that the Ministry of Health gave us, we don’t need to be close to the victim and the victim should stand very far from us. After leaving the boxes we called them to come and take the food.
“The other report I got from family members is that people really worry about the way they are doing the burial ceremony. Most of their relatives who died of this virus are now dumped in a hole and do not even have a prayer for the dead in burial. So this creates tension now and most of the family relatives of the dead find it very hard to see the way these people do the burial. Many of the citizens lost trust by seeing the way the burial team treats the bodies of the dead. Even those who died of other problems are now treated as Ebola victims.
“The computer I am using is old and it is not working well. All of my friends and SLLG members in this photo are also using the same computer. The internet connection is not strong and the connection is not good for Skype. For electricity connection, Sierra Leone is the most darkest country in the world with poor electricity connection. With a better computer, internet, and camera I can better do reporting to get through to the world. Please! Please we are calling for more help.”

DAN McLAUGHLIN
Dan McLaughlin is spearheading the drive to raise funds outside of Sierra Leone. Also help is provided by Stefan Metzler. Writes Dan:
“In the next few days, Sierra Leone Liberty Group will be doing another food distribution. There is a group of very interested young men in the bitcoin community who have been working hard on this…
“They have been focusing mainly on the bitcoin community because they have a lot of connections with it. It definitely would be good to also have ISIL involved and develop a wider-spread campaign. This whole thing could develop into something bigger and long-term. They are interested in helping to develop an entrepreneurship/training school, ultimately having it be a business incubator or practical training center. They have a lot of very good ideas.
“The original plan was to set up a pathway so they could receive money quickly and cheaply. This is a googledoc of the original plan they had: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NdjtROXX_QcKwfw_x_nMNzdn4dmhZeE4vAYQ33jkeDs/edit?invite=COSfvLgJ&pli=1#
“It is actually turning into more than that. There is now a mechanism in place where they can receive money quite cheaply. The organization is fully registered now and is setting up a bank account, so that that will also add flexibility for receiving funds. I have started to put a plan together from the SLLG side, but the focus is developing.

“I will keep you updated on the plans. I do look forward to your input and your help. I appreciate all that you do, not just for SLLG, but as an ambassador for peace all over the world. Thanks.”
Indeed, I urge readers to spread the word and generously support this very courageous and noble effort in Sierra Leone. I’d like to do in voluntary action what I would hope for from others if I was in their shoes.
